Nature alerts & iPhones

You can now be alerted to the latest news and research from Nature journals by setting up a nature.com app on your iPhone. This allows you to either access the full-text of an article immediately or save it for reading later. The app will also allow you to save a search and then receive PubMed alerts (weven though you're a Nature.com app) based on your selection of keywords.

Clinics in Sports Medicine & latest resources

You can now access online, Clinics in Sports Medicine (each issue of which relates to a specific theme). Current issues of Physician and Sportsmedicine should be available shortly.

Test the New Web of Knowledge

If you would like a preview of the (forthcoming) new version of WoK, you could log in to Web of Knowledge and click the top right hand corner linkto "Experience the new version with BIOSIS Citation Index® - Web of Science®". There is an orange box on the next screen with a link that says 'Access it now'. This screen also gives details of what's new.

There will be a number of changes but perhaps the most important is a new powerful Google-like searching option, lemmatisation, which involves the database finding different/related forms of a keyword that you have entered e.g. tooth/teeth. A did you mean? spell-checking option is in development.

Furthermore, cited reference data has now been added to the BIOSIS database which will enable a united set of citation data across all the Web of Knowledge databases. As a result, the 'times cited' count of many articles should increase!

I welcome any feedback or questions you may have about the new version.

Cochrane goes multimedia

Have you checked out the Cochrane Multimedia Portal? This provides a range of online videos, podcasts and slidecasts from the not-for-profit oprganisation The Cochrane Collaboration. Current content includes, amongst others, a six minute video which highlights the role of consumers in promoting evidence-based health care and a nine minute video about how the Cochrane Consumer Network seeks to improve health care in communities around the world.

PubGet: what do you think?

Pubget ”is a search engine for PDFs in the life sciences. We index nearly 20 million life science research documents, including those in PubMed®.” It has been set up to enable links to full-text artitcles from the wide range of journals to which we provide access. The search options are quite basic but a browser toolbar button (PaperPlane) allows you to search in Pubmed and link with ease to a PDF in Pubget. It also provides a convenient way of viewing the latest issues of journals. We're interested to know what you think of it.

Off-campus access to Endnote!

I understand that the University's networked Endnote can now be accessed both off- and on-campus. It's been added as an additional application to the University's Windows Terminal Service. If you have any enquiries regarding this, please contact BUCS.

Endnote is a resource that enables you to store references from multiple databases. A web version of this software exists, called Endnote Web (which you can access via Web of Knowledge). For more information about both resources including short video tutorials, please refer to the Library's Information Skills webpages.

New Database: Social Policy and Practice

Social Policy and Practice, has been added to the Library's List of Health & Medicine Databases. This resource simultaneously searches databases including AgeInfo, ChildData and Social Care Online. Many of its records relate to grey literature e.g. reports, legislation, local/national government documents, organisations, policies, press coverage and service user knowledge. Its main focus is on applied research and practice.

Improved Email Reminder Service

Welcome back! Developments over the Summer

Hello - these are some of the changes that have take place over the vacation period:

You can now bring food and drink into any area of *level 2*.
Level 3 has been refurbished, with extra PCs and power points.
Part of Level 1 has been turned into a new library training room. Thiss pace can still be used for quiet study when it is not in use for training. Our old training room on level 5 has been turned into student silent studyspace.
The newspapers have moved to Level 1.
The Computing Services help desk has moved to the left hand side of level2, next door to the computing shop.
We have abolished 3 day loans: all textbooks are now 7 day loan or shortloan.
Fines have increased slightly, to 20p a day for 28 day loan books and 40pa day for 7 day loan books.
There is a new, free, scanning service. The colour photocopier can be used for scanning and will save documents to your network (H:) drive in theMy Documents folder.
The Library website has been 'transformed' and we hope this will make it easier for you to find a variety of information i.e. resources for your subject etc. Any feedback regarding the change is very welcome: please contact me at lispgb@bath.ac.uk

New type of 'Impact Factor'

SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a free website which generates impact factors for journals covered by the Scopus database. The date coverage is 1996 onwards. Scopus covers a wider range of humanities and social science journals than many databases, so there may be different content to Journal Citation Reports:

“The SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database (Elsevier B.V.). These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains.”

There are journal and country indicators. You can also compare countries and regions. The Help section highlights different features & indicators e.g. H-index.

On-campus Printing: Inter-Library Loans

An update to the Digital Editions software, used for the emailed delivery of Inter-Library Loan articles and book chapters, is continuing to cause problems. At present, users are unable to print out requested documents via the public access PCs. However, we have a dedicated PC set up in the Library that people can use instead. You will find this in the Inter-Library Loans Office at the back of Level 2 (adjacent to the Copy and Print area). Here you will find staff who will assist you with your printing.

New software that we believe will solve the problem is scheduled to be released by the British Library this month.

Keeping Current: Summary of Survey Results

Thanks to everyone who took part in the Current Awareness Survey which was organised by members of Level 4 Library Staff. The results have given us a clearer picture of how you prefer to keep up to date with research. This will help inform the recommendations we make and the content of training sessions.

Our survey focused on alerts that individuals set up via databases or publisher websites. To set these up, individuals can identify individual journal titles in order to receive the latest tables of contents (TOC). Alternatively, they can identify an author, citation or set of keywords in order to receive references from a wide range of journals. Here's a summary of the results:

The most popular alerts: Web of Science and those set up directly from publisher website are most widely used although both received mixed reviews for intuitiveness and quality. Pub Med and Zetoc were amongst services that received the most positive feedback. Researchers are using a huge range of individual journal alerts as well as broader one-stop-shop alerts from databases.
Perceived benefit of alerts: 80% of respondents were positive. They perceived alerts as being quick and easy to set up, providing relevant results and a useful overview of a topic. They also enable serendipity in searching and sometimes provide links.
Perceived problems of alerts: they're slow, complex and irrelevant, lacking both breadth and throughness. They also create information overload & were difficult for staff to fit into their workload.
Waiting... The average user is prepared to wait up for to two weeks post-publication to receive an alert (and is prepared for 5% of alerts never to arrive). However, this average disguises a wide range of opinion.
Other results: 76% would prefer to receive alerts as emails rather than via a feed reader. The most popular alternatives for keeping up-to-date were conferences and review articles.
Comments: Where there were comments on the Library’s online resources, most were positive, although some respondents were unaware that the Library were responsible for providing these resources.
Our own data suggests... Ultimately, getting alerts direct from each publisher provides the fastest, most reliable source, but this is more labour-intensive to set up and monitor than using a one-stop database. Of the databases, Zetoc or Web of Science may prove a better choice if you're more interested in thorough coverage and less concerned about speed, If you want to receive alerts quickly and aren't concerned about the occational alert not arriving, you may prefer to use ELIN.

This could prove a useful means of challenging, confirming, or expanding your understanding of a topic. For similar reasons, you might like to note:
Related records: these link to records that contain shared references.
References: access the records relating to the referenced articles within your selected document i.e. investigate the sources for yourself.
Author Keywords and KeyWords Plus: these may give you added inspiration for your searches.
Add to Marked List: then open your marked list aliong the top menu. From here, email and save your results (it's advisable to select the HTML format option).

Scientific WebPlus:

After you perform a search in web of Knowledge, you will see a Scientific WebPlus image that appears above your sets of results on the right hand side of the screen. If you click on either this or view web results, you may find useful additional material beyond journal literature e.g. organisational guidelines, summaries of conditions, academic webpages etc.

Although this content is openly accessible on the Web, the websites are selected by the same editors who select the journals that are indexed by Web of Knowledge. Unavailability of IT Services

In order to carry out vital upgrade work BUCS have scheduled maintenance from 5.10pm on Friday 27th March to 8am on Monday 30th March. During this period, University network services will be unavailable. In preparation for the shutdown, some services might be affected from 4pm onward on 27th March.

This network shutdown will of course affect library services. Although there will be limited borrowing facilities, there will be:

No loan renewals or holds/reservations can be made over the weekend.
No access to printing (although the coin operated photocopier will be available).
No access to the University's website - including Moodle and the library webpages, e-journals and databses. This will effect both on and off-campus users.
If you would like to borrow a book for the first time, loans can be issued manually.

All users are advised to plan ahead to obtain any library materials or use library services and resources in advance of the weekend shutdown.

Over this engineering weekend, university users will have no access to campus PCs - including those in the Library, labs and e-lounges. Furthermore, the Wireless network will be offline.

BUCS aim to restore normal services as soon as possible once the required upgrades have been completed. Progress may be posted on the BUCS News page.

Opus arrives! Increase the visibility of your research!

Opus, the University's repository, was launched today. Set up in large part by Kara Jones, the Research Publications Librarian, Opus is an online store which enables full-text papers and data to be both preserved and show-cased. It offers great potential in helping increase citation rates. Furthermore, it enables University of Bath researchers to release their papers publicly, as often required by funding bodies. Weekend Access to Web of Knowledge & Endnote Web

Web of Knowledge and Endnote Web are about to be upgraded in order to introduce enhancements to refined searching and impact factors.

As a result, there will be brief periods of disrupted access to Web of Knowledge from 2pm on Sunday 1st February. This will also effect access to Web of Science, Biosis Previews, Journal Citation Reports and Medline (the Web of Knowledge version).

Access to Endnote Web will be similarly disrupted from 2am on Saturday 31st January.
Both periods of disruption are expected to last a few hours.

When you write up your research, are you clear, precise and forceful? Is there room for improvement? If so, you may like to book up for a free coaching session with Trevor Day who coaches science students & staff in many aspects of writing. Trevor is the University's Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund. More information about Trevor Day.

Each session lasts 50-minutes. The sessions start on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16 December. They continue after Christmas on Mondays and Tuesdays, starting on Tuesday 6 January.

Christmas Vacation Opening Hours

Upgraded Web of Knowledge & Endnote Web

An upgrade of Web of Knowledge and Endnote Web has resulted in the following enhancements:

ISI Conference Proceedings has been merged into the Web of Science database: Therefore, when you click on the times cited links within either Web of Science or Web of Knowledge, you can now view records for conference papers as well as journal articles. A new search field, conference paper, has been added and applies retrospectively to past papers as well as those to be indexed in the future.
Academics: if your conference paper has been indexed, this may help increase the number of times it is cited.
Web of Science: author names and addresses are now linked and furthermore, links to the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) have been incorporated.
Visual citation mapping: an option to simplify the maps through limiting date ranges has been introduced.

The library has contributed a number of research and information skills sessions to the PGSkills programme of training events. Topics include how to keep current, searching for literature & statisitics, Web of Knowledge, sport science databases, referencing, avoiding plagiarism & copyright infringement, career information and archiving your research in the University's repository.

For information about dates, specific topics, and bookings, please visit the Postgraduate skills training page. All library sessions will take place in the Library Level 5 West training room from 10:15 to 11.45 am. The room overlooks the Parade on the top floor of the Library.

Going Grey...

If you've come across the term grey literature and were uncertain what it meant, you're probably not alone. By its very nature it is difficult to define but very roughly speaking... it's literature that is relatively difficult to find i.e. more diffiicult than locating an academic article through a database for example. The term is often covers reports and guidelines issued through organisations.

I've just added a grey literature database called PsycEXTRA to the library's Other Websites for Health and Medicine webpage (which is accessible via the main health and medicine page). On this page, you will find links taking you to grey literature across a wide range of health topics.

PsycEXTRA features mostly full-text documents which arfe written by professionals but are not found in journals.

New Look SportDiscus

You may have noticed that SportDiscus has been upgraded with a fresher, more 'state of the art' design. The previous functionality remains much the same e.g. you can limit your results to peer-reviewed literature.

If you set up an 'account' while the previous version was livew, your password is still valid - you may want to set one up to enable you to retrieve results between sessions and re-run previous searches.

Note you can opt to search for keywords within the full-text of some articles as well as within references and abstracts.

Searching Medline within Web of Knowledge!

You can now search the contents of Medline while undertaking a search of Web of Knowledge! This is potentially good news as Medline represents the majority of content within Pubmed. Furthermore, this development will enable you to simultaneously search across Medline, Web of Science, Biosis Previews and ISI Proceedings!

Pubmed remains as a link on the Library's subject pages for health and sport but will be listed under 'other databases'. The databases can be found via the relevant link to your subject resources.

A word of caution: you aren't able to search by MESH Subject Headings within Web of Knowledge. MESH headings are useful because they are selected by professionals to identify the themes represented in individual papers. However...

Help is at hand: You can still search by MESH headings if you search Medline on its own. To do this, enter Web of Knowledge, click on select a database and opt for Medline. Then select MESH Headings from the right-hand side drop-down menu and search for a term. Alternatively, you can continue to use PubMed.

What do I do if my search terms aren't found via MESH? I'll be updating information about this but in the mean time, you can contact me at P.G.Bradley@bath.ac.uk - indeed, please contact me if you have any comments about these developments.

One of our major library book suppliers, Dawson Books, have recently launched a new e-book service called dawsonera. The Library is providing access to this resource on a trial basis from today and up until Tuesday 7th May.

During the trial, you will be able to read the full-text of 50 e-Books which have been selected by Dawsons. To do this, visit dawsonera and click on eBook Catalogue.

To find out what other titles may be added in the future, visit dawsonera and click on Advanced Search. Then select Include Not Owned before searching. I'd be very interested to hear your comments on these via email or the comments link below.

Endnote & managing your references

There's nothing worse than finding a fantastic reference... and then forgetting to record its details...well, help is at hand. Most databases enable you to email/save references that you're interested in or have followed up. However, you can go one step further and collate references from across multiple databases and organise them within one reference managing resource such as Endnote or Endnote Web.

The Library now provides a wealth of online information and links to help support users of EndNote and EndNote Web reference management tools.

You can find this by going to the Library's webpages for your subject and clicking on Help with finding Information. Then go to the last link at the bottom of the page. Information includes FAQs and instructions for importing references. There are also links to training manuals and information about training sessions provided by Computing Services.

New Cancer Journal..& other resources

The following journals are available via Library / ELIN e-Journals.

ecancermedicalscience: this is a new open access e-journal which features articles, policy documents, case reports, conference reports, videos, forums, events and various news feeds. It's published by the European Institute of Oncology who will be seeking an impact factor after 12 months. An impact factor is a measure of academic influence based on numbers of citations and is used by Journal Citation Reports.

American Journal of Cardiology: the first of a series of titles, provided by ScienceDirect that has just been added to our holdings.

Technology and Health Care: recently added IOS Press title.

Nature Archive: you can now access the entire archive from 1869 onwards.

Changes to EMBASE & PsycINFO

The following OVID databases have just been upgraded and whilst some of the same functionality remains, you'll notice several changes:

IBSS (International Bibliography of the Social Sciences)
PsycINFO

To do a basic search in any of these, I'd now recommend you click on the furthest tab which is Advanced OVID Search (or in PsycINFO, OVID Syntax). If you're doing a standard keyword search, remember to deselect map to subvect heading.

Help with using the new interface is available via the Database Field Guide and Help sections of each database.

I've also helped produce guides to the new version of EMBASE and PsycINFO. You might like to refer to these guides if you use IBSS as it shares much of the same functionality. You can also contact me for advice.

ELIN: for easy searching

The Library is very pleased to announce the launch of ELIN@Bath (Electronic Library Information Navigator). In ELIN, you can access a significant proportion of the Library's online articles, e-journals, e-books and databases from within the one user-friendly location.

ELIN can be accessed via the Library homepage at http://www.bath.ac.uk/library/ and at http://www.bath.ac.uk/library/elin/ ELIN will be trialled alongside the Library's existing web pages and catalogue for one year.

One of its main benefits is that you choose to only search for articles available in full text. This includes articles from journals to which the Library subscribes and open access journals. You can then follow a link to the full text.

In My Collection, you can save your search queries and results for retrieval at a later date. You can also receive email alerts when new articles are published that relate to your queries.

If you register with databases such as Web of Science and SportDiscus, you can also save searches for later retrieval and set up email alerts. For more information, check out the online guides for these resources on the Library webpages or contact P.G.Bradley@bath.ac.uk

PC Availability

If you've ever had a frustrating search for a spare PC in the library, help is at hand. Sarah Lymn and Richard Whitcher of BUCS Computing Services have set up a system that allows you to see at a glance, how many free PCs there are on each floor.

This information appears on the Library's large plasma screens (one of which is located directly ahead when you enter the building).

A New Web of Knowledge

Over the next few months, the Web of Knowledge databases will be gradually upgraded, resulting in a new appearance and a range of enhanced functions. For example, it will become easier to switch between searching an individual database, such as Web of Science, and searching across all of the Web of Knowledge.

While the upgrade is being undertaken, you will be able to preview/use either the new versions of the following Web of Knowledge databases (or continue using the existing versions):

Web of Science
BIOSIS Previews
ISI Proceedings

To preview and use any of the above, connect to the relevant database via the Library's Databases or Resources for your Subject. After entering the database, click on the preview the new version button which you will find at the top of the web page. On the following page, look for the button further down the page to take you to the resource (you don't need to click on take the next step).

If you have stored a saved search within the old version, this can be retrieved within both the new and old Web of Knowledge. However, if you have produce a saved search within the new version, you will not be able to access this in the old database.

It is anticipated that the marked records function should be available in the new Web of Knowledge from November 2007. The new version of Journal Citation Reports has yet to be released.

Accessing other libraries: new scheme

From August 1st, students and staff from the University of Bath can visit a range of higher education libraries in the UK and Republic of Ireland through the SCONUL Access scheme. You may be able to borrow from some libraries, depending on the category of library user to which you belong.

SCONUL Access replaces the following access schemes: UK Libraries Plus, SCONUL Research Extra and the SCONUL Vacation Scheme. If you already belong to one of these schemes, you can continue to use your current card until it expires. Alternatively, you may prefer to request a new SCONUL Access card. 15th August 1415-1545: Introduction to Copyright for teaching and research (for staff and postgraduates with teaching responsibilities): Guidelines for what you can and cannot copy or make available for your classes in your teaching. The session covers copyright regulations with reference to developments in Creative Commons Licencing.

22nd August, 1415-1545: Keeping up to date: Identifies alerting services to keep abreast of developments in your field of research. Mainly covering the use of RSS newsfeeds but also Table of Contents alerting services (ZETOC), identification of email lists and conferences etc.

29th August, 1415-1545: Who’s Citing Whom? Want to know who is citing articles you’ve written, or trace developments since a particular article was published? Help with citation searching within the Web of Science and using Journal Citation Reports to find journal impact factors.

4th September, 1015-1145: Self Archiving and the University Repository: Of interest to those publishing articles and papers. The institutional repository is a store for full-text papers and materials from members of an organisation such as a university. It allows research to be preserved and show-cased, and helps improve article citation rates. It also helps researchers to meet funding body requirements to make their research publicly available.

Excellent news about the new Ebsco version of SportDiscus! The Library is now subscribing to the 'Full-text version' of the database via http://www.bath.ac.uk/library/info/sp.html

This enables you to access many new journal titles online, both via SportDiscus and the Library's E-Journals A-Z at http:www.bath.ac.uk/library/ej/ - the majority of new titles have already been added to this list.

Journal Citation Reports has just been updated, providing journal impact factors up until and including to 2006. You can search JCR to assess to what extent a periodical is cited across a range of journal literature.

New BMJ Data resource

I've arranged for the BMJ to provide us with free trial access to their new resource, BMJ Health Intelligence, until the end of June. Health Intelligence contains a broad range of public health data/information. I would very much welcome your views on the value of its content and functionality (read further for access details).

Data/information includes statistics, evidence, policies, targets, guidelines, local projects (e.g. start-up costs and interventions) and ROI tables (returns on investments). A broad range of topics are represented including health inequalities, screening, older people, alcohol misuse, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and others.

BMJ Archives Available

The BMJ has started releasing the full back archive of its 23 journals for free! This will amount to an extended coverage of over 4800 issues. The archive of 'Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases' has already been made available (from 1939; Volume 1 , Issue 1 onwards).

The Library e-Journals A-Z is updated on a regular basis in order to reflect new titles that are made available and any extended date coverage. The Library pays a subscription for ongoing issues published by the BMJ.

Inter-Library Loans: Changes

Since the launch of the electronic Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service in November, the number of requests received on the printed ILL form has dwindled to around 10%. Furthermore, 75% of articles requested via the online service are delivered within 48 hours.

Therefore, as a result of the general improvement in speed and convenience of the electronic route, we have decided to abandon the printed ILL request form and we will no longer send out photocopies of journal articles with the following exceptions:

A print-based service will be offered on request to those users with specific requirements, e.g. the visually-impaired.
You can request a photocopied copy if you need enhanced-quality images: photocopies take longer to arrive but are are of better quality/higgher resolution than scanned items..
Users requesting theses must complete an additional Thesis Declaration Form, giving a handwritten signature to accompany the electronic ILL request itself. This is a requirement of the British Library Thesis Service.

Library Scanning Service for Academics

The Library is very pleased to announce that the Library Scanning Service has been launched! This new service will enable academic staff to take advantage of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Scanning Licence. We expect this service might be of great benefit to students, especially distance learners.

The license is paid for by the Library and enables us to deliver electronic copies of certain printed materials held in the Library. For more information, please view the: Guide to the Library Scanning Service.

Finding Print Journals from 1980-1984

We're currently in the process of moving our 1980-1984 print journals from Level 4 to Level 1 where they will join those published prior to 1980. An additional five years will help free up some desperately needed space. This change may not appear on the library catalogue yet, so if you are looking for a journal article from before 1985, please do check with library staff for assistance with locating the volume you require.

Endnote Web: an easier way to manage your references

During your research, you'll collect a large number of references to articles, books, proceedings and other documents. In order to keep an organised and searchable record of these, you might like to use EndNote Web; an online version of the software, Endnote . As a result of the Library's subscription to Web of Knowledge, University of Bath staff & students can use it free-of-charge.

This can be accessed from any location and via the Library webpages; for example, via the online resources webpage.

You can record up to 10,000 references at a time and retain collections of references between sessions of research. You can also create and format lists of references in a variety of styles.

In order to create and access your own EndNote Web references, you first need to sign in / register.

Please be aware that you will lose your EndNote Web collection of references when you leave the University. However, before leaving, you can transfer your references to the software version of Endnote. If you are a student, this can be purchased at a discount rate. For more information, contact IT Purchasing.

If you are already using the software version of Endnote, you can move your entire collection of references to EndNote Web.

You can also access Endnote Web from within Web of Knowledge: click on My Endnote Web which is listed at the bottom right of the homepage.

If you are unable to export references from a particular database or you would like more information, please contact me.

Semester 2 Core Texts & Reading Lists

To ensure that the library has copies of core texts for semester 2, please could members of academic staff forward me all relevant reading lists, even if the lists haven't changed since last year (more recent editions may have been published since).

• Title of course / unit number and approximate numbers of students
• Any specific editions of books needed - otherwise I'll upgrade to the latest edition available.
• Identification of the core texts - this will help me select appropriate loan categories and numbers of multiple copies.

UK PubMed Central Goes Live!

UK PubMed Central is now live! UKPMC is an open-access archive of freely available, peer-reviewed articles. It provides an opportunity for UK academics to submit their own research for potential inclusion. It also mirrors the contents of the US archive.

"The Wellcome Trust requires electronic copies of any research papers that have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and are supported in whole or in part by Wellcome Trust funding, to be deposited into PubMed Central (PMC) or UK PMC once established, to be made freely available as soon as possible and in any event within six months of the journal publisher's official date of final publication"

You can now receive loan reminders by email to inform you that your books are due for return. Emails are sent one day before the return date. To opt in to this service, please follow these instructions:

Go to your use of the Library. You can also access this webpage via the Library homepage.

Click on either check your borrower record or renew your loans.
Enter your library number (see back of library card) and PIN number.
Click on the turn reminders on button.
If you don't know your PIN, click on change your PIN via your use of the Library. Use the right-hand box to request it.
You can also use the same pages to opt out of the service.

PsycBOOKS

The Library has arranged temporary access to PsycBOOKS, the American Psychological Association (APA) database of electronic books and chapters. The trial will end on Monday 1st January 2007. More information. Visit PsycBOOKS.

Complete Digitisation of Medical Backfiles

The Wellcome Trust, JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) and the NLM (National Library of Medicine) have embarked on a joint project aimed at digitising the complete backfiles of 11 medical journals by Spring 2007.

As each is digitised, it will be made available via Pubmed Central and therefore, will be accessible on a free, open access basis. It will also become available via the Library's E-Journals A-Z.
